Who was Samuel Arnold?

posted Saturday, 9 April 2005
When tracing the Cades of Gamlingay, I found that the marriages of Jonathan Cade and Ann Head (in 1862) and of Jonathan's parents Reuben Cade and Susanna Baines (in 1839) were both witnessed, it would seem, by the same person, Samuel Arnold

Cambridgeshire Family History Society's transcription of the 1851 census for the area shows a Samuel Arnold, aged 55, living in Gamlingay with Ann, 64, and a number of other Arnolds.  The family also features in the 1841 index.  Unfortunately, from the indexes, I can't really tell whether they were near neighbours of the Cades (who aren't really visible in either of these freely-available indexes).

Mystery solved!

BUT the CFHS's Web site points me to the Federation of Family History Societies' searchable databases for the full transcripts of the census (pay-per-view) and the mystery is quickly solved: insteading of being some distant relative he is the Parish Clerk at Gamlingay! (of course, he may be a distant relative too, but I don't feel so moved now to try to make another connection).  It may be that Samuel witnessed most of the marriages in the parish ... something else to check if I get to see the copies of the original indexes on microfiche.  He would have been around 43 at the time of Reuben's marriage, a little over 60 when Jonathan married Alice.
