Whither Wakefields? Next instalment

posted Sunday, 1 May 2005
Ancestry's 1861 census transcript offering has allowed one small step further backward in the quest to find out more about the Wakefields. Charles Safferey Wakefield remains elusive, but here we find his wife Phoebe, nee Wade, living at 4 Holiday Yard, St Martin Ludgate, on 1861 census night. She is shown as 'married', aged 27, working as a needlewoman and with three small children: Phebe, 7, born in Stepney like her mother; Edmund, aged 3, born in Bishopgate, and William, 9 months, born in Shoreditch. They share their building with at least three other households. Son Charles Theodore (IGI and 1871 census) doesn't appear in the household.  A further search doesn't find Charles senior either. Perhaps by now he was dead, and Phoebe's youngest child, born in 1862, was actually fathered by a mystery man?
