The elusive John Thomas Stocking

posted Wednesday, 2 January 2008
Third son of Alice and James STOCKING's 16-21? children and probably their sixth child, John Thomas was born in 1883, according to the censuses, although there is a FreeBMD record showing a John T STOCKING registered in the September quarter in St Olave. I know very little about John. He is aged 8 and living with his parents at the time of the 1891 census. He is still living at home in 1901, aged 18, with no recorded occupation. The Medal Roll Index at TNA suggests that he was a Private in the King's Own Rifles who went to France after 1916. He was eligible for the Victory and Campaign medals. There is a possible marriage index entry for John Thomas in the June quarter of 1915, in St Olave. The bride's name is Florence WILLSHEN. But I don't have any further evidence that this is the 'right' John, nor any information about any descendents they may have had.
