Sandy 'job lot' baptisms, 1862: Fage and Wilshire

posted Sunday, 13 January 2008

Sandy's parish church is St Swithun's. According to an online timeline of Sandy , in "1861: Church of St. Swithun restored and enlarged at a cost of £3,300."  Might this restoration have led to a greater enthusiasm for baptisms? A zealous new minister, perhaps? I ask because two branches of my family tree appear to have had all or most of their children baptised in one go, two months apart in 1862.

The IGI and Sandy parish registers (seen at Bedfordshire Archives and Library Services: BLARS) show the children of John and Elizabeth FAGE all baptised on 2 November 1862.

1862 Nov 2 Harriet d John and Elizabeth Fage, Sandy, Labr
1862 Nov 2 Jem s John and Elizabeth Fage, Sandy, Labr
1862 Nov 2 Elijah s John and Elizabeth Fage, Sandy, Labr
1862 Nov 2 Frederick s John and Elizabeth Fage, Sandy, Labr
1862 Nov 2 Rosetta d John and Elizabeth Fage, Sandy, Labr
1862 Nov 2 Ellen d John and Elizabeth Fage, Sandy, Labr

Their eldest daughter, Mary Ann, is missing, as is William, born COCKING in 1840, who took his mother's husband's surname of FAGE some time after their marriage. The baptised children were all born between 1849 and 1861 (so perhaps Ellen's baptism triggered the others). Jem Fage was my great-great-grandfather, father of John who was in turn father to Elizabeth Sarah b.1901.

A month earlier, on 5 October 1862, The Wilsher (Wilshire/Wiltshire) children were also baptised:

1862 Oct 5 Sarah d George and Marianne Wilsher, Sandy, Labr
1862 Oct 5 William s George and Marianne Wilsher, Sandy, Labr

1862 Oct 5 John s George and Marianne Wilsher, Sandy, Labr
1862 Oct 5 Emma Elizabeth d George and Marianne Wilsher, Sandy, Labr

These children were born between 1851 and 1862 (so again, a newborn may have triggered the mass baptism). Sarah Wilsher was my great-great-grandmother, who married Jem Fage in 1870.
