Thanks to a generous contact made via this MyRoots blog, I have been able to make quite a bit of progress on the
Seaby branch of the family history. Back in
April 2005, I seemed to have found the death certificate of William
Seaby, one of my great-great-grandfathers on my mother's side, but still needed to locate a parish register entry for his birth.
David kindly sent me some relevant transcriptions from the Cambridgeshire FHS' fiche of the Parish Registers of Dry Drayton 1564-1851 (sub-sets are searchable at the
Cambs FHS web site). These show the christening of William
Seaby on 18 September 1831, son of Joseph and Elizabeth
Seaby. This fits with William's father's name from his marriage certificate and census records indicating his likely birth place and year. The christenings of William's siblings Charlotte (1833), Joshua (1835) and Mary Ann (1838-1841) also feature, tying in with IGI and 1841/51 census records (excluding Mary Ann).
The banns for William's parents' marriage are also recorded on 1 November 1829, showing that Joseph
Seaby intended to marry Elizabeth
Parish (widow) of Caldecote. They weren't married in Dry Drayton but in Caldecote, on 2 November 1829, as Boyd's marriage index and the
IGI both confirm. What neither of these sources had shown was that Elizabeth
Parish was a widow when she married Joseph, and that's the exciting bit of the jigsaw ... to follow up
next!
