I know that my four times great-grandfather Thomas EPHGRAVE occupied Heron's Farm , Gustard Wood, Wheathampstead at the time of the 1841 census.
Ten years later in 1851 he and his family are still there, and he is described as 'farming 140 acres'. Thomas died in 1854, leaving her all his property (not detailed) to his wife Elizabeth (nee KILBY). She died in the following year; her will details the four cottages she owned, but makes no mention of the farm. So presumably the EPHGRAVES were tenant farmers and the farm reverted to its owners after 1855.
In 1911, the farm was being farmed by the WOOLLETT family: Harry Finch WOLLETT is 45 and his wife Rose Mary is 38. They have a two year old son Harry Edward. Harry senior gives his birthplace as Samwell Farm, Sandridge. The house has seven rooms (excluding landings, lobbies, closets and bathrooms) which suggests that it was already a considerable size compared to the farmhouse offered for rent in 2009.
Ten years earlier, in 1901, Harry was described as Farmer, and is living at Heron's Farm with his widowed mother Susan (nee FINCH) and his brothers Charles J (also working on the farm), Walter (Butcher's Assistant) and Horace (Telephone Inspector).
In 1891, the WOOLLETT family was farming at Samwell Farm, Sandridge, where Harry Finch WOOLLETT was born. I looked through the enumeration district for Wheathampstead, including Heron's Farm. On the way I found recorded in 'The Shed', George South, 68, described as 'Professional Cadger', born in Wheathampstead! Unfortunately, although Heron's Farm is mentioned in the district description, I couldn't find it on the census pages.
In 1881, Hearn's Farm (as it is then spelt) at 168 acres is being farmed by the unmarried Joseph FINCH, presumably an ancestor of Harry WOOLLETT's mother.
He is also the farmer of the same acreage in 1871, described as 'employing five men and three boys'. Also in the house are housekeeper Anne MUNT, Horsekeeper Thomas PLUMB and Frederic Hollingsworth, Farm Sergeant.
I can't find Hearn's Farm in the 1861 census, which is rather annoying!
