The
1881 census transcripts and
IGI have provided some possible steps forward in my quest '
Whither Wakefields'.
I looked for Phebe Virginia
Wakefield's brothers Charles and Henry. There is a Henry
Wakefield in the 1881 census transcript, aged 19 (c. 1862), born in London, Middlesex, and an Ordy (Ordinary [seaman]?) on the Royal Navy vessel Tenedol. No sign though of his brother Charles.
The IGI has christening records for Henry Love
Wakefield at St John the Baptist, Shoreditch, born 2 July 1862, christened 24 February 1867, Father: Charles Saffery
Wakefield; Mother: Phebe.
Phebe Virginia's and Charles Theodore's christenings are also recorded in the IGI - a major find!
Charles Theodore
Wakefield, born 9 September 1855, christenend St Thomas Charterhouse, Finsbury, 30 September 1855 and Phebe Virginia
Wakefield born 20 May 1853, christened 30 September 1855, also in Finsbury.
FreeBMD has Henry Love
Wakefield, Sept 1862 St Luke 1b 552 Shoreditch (and another record, possibly for his son, Henry Love
Wakefield, 1886, Shoreditch, 1c 103). A marriage entry for Henry Love
Wakefield for June 1886 in Shoreditch has the bride as Eleanor Phebe
Waddington 1c 177. Henry L
Wakefield and wife Eleanor P (28 and 24 respectively) are found in the 1891 census at 110 Laburnam Street, St Leonard's, Shoreditch; Henry is a horse hair dresser, Eleanor's occupation is shown as 'needlework'. They have a 3-year old son Henry L, and a 1-year old son, William ?. By 1901, the family has expanded with Louisa, Lilly and Joseph. Phebe
James, widowed mother-in-law, is also living in the household - possibly Eleanor
Waddington's mother who has remarried.
Phoebe/Phebe seems to have been a remarkably popular name in a number of families through a few generations.
But Charles Saffrey/Saffery Wakefield's birth and marriage are still eluding me, although there may be a death record December 1864 in St James Westminster 1a 319.
