More on the Beautyman brothers' ships

posted Sunday, 20 April 2008

Following earlier leads from contacts Maureen and Lesley, some internet searching reveals information that might be linked to the Beautyman's ships (or those on which they served), The British Queen, The Grenville Bay and HMS Arrogant, and possibly The Elizabeth and Countess Hopetown.

The British Queen is mentioned at The Whalers' Heritage Project website's alphabetical listing of captains (M-Z) taken from 'Arctic Whalers' by Basil Lubbock (list compiled for the site by Yvonne Leck). The ship's captain in 1767 was a Captain STANDIDGE. The same book mentions the ship as a wreck in 1822 (see the Shipwrecks section of the same site). Its home port was Newcastle.

The Grenville Bay is also mentioned at the same site with voyages in 1835-7 under a captain TAYLOR. She is not listed in the wrecks section.
