Matilda Head nee Gilbert: a second marriage

posted Wednesday, 4 May 2005
Ann Head was the wife of Jonathan Cade; they were the parents of my great-grandmother Alice Cade. They were married in 1862 in Cambridgeshire. In the 1861 census, Jonathan and his family remain elusive, but Ann is recorded aged 18, a Straw Plaiter, living with her mother Matilda, nee Gilbert and siblings Samuel, Sarah and Thomas. The head of the household is Matilda's second husband John Westrope. They probably married around 1860 or 1859, as they have a one-year old son, George. Matilda's first husband, Samuel Head, must have died sometime between 1851 (when son Thomas was conceived) and 1859. So far, I haven't found Matilda's second marriage; there is a possible death record for Samuel in Biggleswade, Sept, 6 33 1851.

Matilda and John Westrope aren't obvious in the 1871 census, but appear in the 1881 and 1891 censuses (by the time of the latter, Matilda's grand-daughter, Alice Cade, aged 19, is living with them.  Matilda is recorded as blind).
