Marrying off the Stocking children: Alice Caroline

posted Tuesday, 1 January 2008

Of the 16 children of my great-great-grandparents James and Alice STOCKING, I have managed to find marriage and/or military records for several of them.

Alice Caroline STOCKING was born in 1875 (registered St Olave, March quarter), a few months after her parents' marriage in 1874. By the 1891 census, she is described as a Needlewoman (shirts). By 1901 she is married to Bill SCOFIELD and is working as a Gent's Hat Trimmer. They are living at 33 Parfitt Road, Rotherhithe (another family of SCOFIELDs is also living in the same street). Bill is employed as a brushmaker. There is a marriage index entry for Alice Caroline STOCKING and William Joseph SCOFIELD in the December quarter of 1900 in Camberwell. Bill was a witness at Alice's brother James' wedding in June that year and may have been his best man. Until the 1911 census I have no way of identifying any of their children, although there is a birth index entry in FreeBMD for a William Aaron J SCOFIELD in St Olave in 1902; given the combination of first names, this may be one of their children. Bill was born in around 1879 (from the 1901 census) and would have been 12 at the time of the 1891 census. He may possibly be the same William J SCOFIELD, aged 12, living with his parents Ebenezer (Brushmaker) and Alice, in Southwark. So far, that's pretty much all I know about Alice and her family.
