Great-uncle John Charles Hill was in the Royal West Kent Special Reserves and the 1st battalion of the regular army between 1908 and 1920. His papers at ancestry.co.uk show that he was a less than model solider, with a handful of offences - mainly drunkenness and being absent without leave.
In September 1910, he overstayed a pass and was given 14 days' 'CB'; in August 1911 he was absent without leave and was punished with 72 hours' detention; a month later he was at it again, overstaying his pass and getting 96 hours' detention; in January 1912 he returned drunk to barracks 'at 12.35 am' and was given a punishment of 8 days (although 8 days of what isn't specified); his final misdemeanour was in the same year, this time 'being drunk in town at 3.50pm', when both a fine a 7 days punishment were levied.
