James Fage born c1851, Bedfordshire : 2nd instalment

posted Monday, 2 May 2005
James Fage and his family continue to prove elusive ... or confusing (or both!).

In the 1861 census I thought I'd 'cracked' it: James Fage, aged 1851, born Sandy, is a 10 year old 'scholar' living with his parents John and Elizabeth (born 1822 and 1820 in Sandy). Other siblings include Mary Ann (1847, Northill); Harriett (1849, Northill); Elijah (1854, Sandy); Frederick (1856, Sandy); Rosa (1859, Sandy) and Celina (9 months, also born in Sandy). Why the confusion? Well, in previous explorations, I'd found a birth certificate for a John Fage, born in 1851, son of John and Elizabeth Fage, nee Cocking. But this John doesn't appear with this family (and would have the same birth year as the James that does). So perhaps these aren't John and Elizabeth nee Cocking, although this might be 'my' James! By the 1871 census, James has married, so I can't follow the family through there too far. However, two of James' children have similar names to those of this siblings, that is: Mary Ann and Elijah. Coincidence? Maybe.

In the 1871 census, Elizabeth Fage is aged 51, a Straw Plaiter (like her young daughters Rosa and Ellen (Celina?)) in Sandy.  It's unclear from the census image whether she is a widow.  I can't find John's death in FreeBMD or Ancestry, nor can I find him elsewhere in the census (mistranscriptions aside).  Elijah and Frederick are still at home, 17 and 15, and working as general labourers.

More work needed.  :-(
