My 4xgreat-grandfather William Gibson was probably born in North Shields, Northumberland, around 1835 according to the censuses. He is named as father of William Joseph James Gibson on the latter's birth certificate, whilst his mother is shown as Caroline nee Holland. They married in 1855 and appear singly and together on the 1841-1891 censuses. All documents refer to William (like his father and his sons) as 'looking glass frame maker'. Caroline died on 3 January 1896 in Islington. The 1901 census includes a William Gibson, inmate of the Edmonton workhouse. His age (68), status (widower), birthplace (North Shields) and occupation (carpenter) all tie in with earlier information on William.
A search for death certificates to finally 'kill him off' in my tree has proved difficult. One certificate is for a William aged 45 in 1901, in Bloomsbury and St Giles district (St Giles workhouse). But this William was a Draper's Assistant - not the right one. Another workhouse death (or at least, at Holborn Infirmary) in 1892 shows a William Gibson, Tailor journeyman, husband of Catherine. Another 'miss'.
I feel that the William Gibson of the 1901 census, Edmonton Workhouse, is probably 'my' William - but I still haven't found his death entry to finally kill him off - potentially a long trawl not knowing the date other than after census night 1901, nor location (he may not have stayed at Edmonton).
