Harry CADE b1869: Infantryman, patient at Stoke Damerel?

posted Sunday, 27 January 2008

Harry CADE was born in Gamlingay in 1869, one of my great-grandmother Alice CADE's older brothers. He appears in the 1871 census with his parents and siblings, and in 1881 he is still at home with his widowed father. But by 1891 he appears to be a patient (‘Soldier, Infantry, Private’) at Stoke Damerel Military Hospital in Devon, aged 21. His birthplace is given as Potten in Bedfordshire, rather than Gamlingay, but this may be because his father and sister Susan are now living there. By 1901, he appears to have married (to Louisa), and the couple is living in Grays, Essex, with their children Harry (4), Edward (3) and Louisa (1). He is working as a Bricklayer’s Labourer (like his brother Arthur at the time of the 1891 census). There is a FreeBMD marriage record for 1896 in Orsett between Henry CADE and Louisa SMITHSON, and birth entries in the same area for Harry Jonathan CADE in Dec 1896 (4a 505); Charles Edward CADE in March 1898 (4a 547) and Mary Louisa CADE in 1899 (4a 557). I don't know anything more about the family after 1901.
