Gamlingay connections

posted Saturday, 9 April 2005
Tracing the Cades and the mystery of Samuel Arnold prompted me to look back at the Gamlingay village Web site. I've always tried to put some flesh on the facts and figures found through BMD indexes, censuses and certificates and that includes trying to find information about the places my forebears lived and, where possible, visiting them. I haven't made it to Gamlingay yet, but the village Web site has lots of interest.

Firstly, by a vague coincidence, Gamlingay has been owned jointly by Downing College Cambridge since the 1500s, and my partner Steve went to Downing.

Secondly, the site features an article from the Gamlingay Gazette with the memories of forty years or more from one of their readers. There are three mentions of Cades, including a weekly Barclays Bank that took place every Tuesday "in the front room of Mr Ruben Cade's house opposite the Church". Mention is also made of a dental surgery that took place in the front room of Mrs Cade's, in Church Street (presumably the same house, so a busy place!).
