My grandfather, James Aaron Stocking, married my grandmother Jessie Ephgrave in 1929. This was his second marriage. His first was to a widow, Edith Florence Massey (nee Herring), in 1927. Although not related to me, the Herring-Massey connection interests me; I bought their marriage certificate a couple of months ago and for completeness looked them up in the 1911 census. I found Edith Florence Herring, aged 17, born Pimlico, London, working as a general domestic servant in the household of Herbert Albert Friend(?), a Master Draper, and his family at 22 Penerley Road.
George Massey was born in Liverpool and the couple married there in 1919. Eight years earlier he was still living with his parents in Anfield, Liverpool. Aged 21, he is working as a porter.
I still don't know how or where the couple met. After her husband's death, Edith presumably returned to her family in London, where she met my grandfather. The couple may, of course, have moved to London earlier. I haven't found George's death record yet, which might help close the loop.
