Death of the wrong Mary Ann Stocking (1907)

posted Sunday, 2 November 2008

I haven't ordered any certificates for a while, but submitted a small batch of requests a week ago. The first to arrive (very quickly) is for the death of Mary Ann STOCKING on 10th April 1907, age at death 79 years. This matches details of my 3xgreat-grandmother, nee COLLINS in 1828. Unfortunately the other details on the certificate show this can't be the right Mary Ann. But just in case it's of interest to anyone else researching STOCKINGs (and to remind myself not to order it again!), the GRO reference is Year: 1907 Quarter Jun District Brentford Vol 3a Page 89.

On the certificate, place of death is 106 Shakespeare Road, Acton UD. Name and surname are as expected, Mary Ann STOCKING, Sex female, Age 79 years. Her 'occupation' is given as Wife of Barnabas STOCKING, Builder (retired). Cause of death is Strangulated Hernia, certified by Ernest E H Landon MRCS. The informant was Amelia STOCKING, Daughter, Present at the death, 106 Shakespeare Road, Acton. The death was registered on the day it occurred, 10th April 1907. Registrar was Henry Mitchell.

So whilst the splendidly named Barnabas was a builder like many STOCKINGs in my tree, they aren't the family I was looking for.  More searching to be done.
