Death of Lucy Fage (nee Jones), Potton, 1879

posted Sunday, 17 June 2007

Lucy (also known as Louisa) Fage was my four times great-grandmother and I think I have found her death certificate. She appears in the 1841-1871 censuses as wife, and then widow, of George Fage.  They were the parents of my 3xgreat-grandfather James Fage and his eight brothers and sisters, and lived at Lower Caldecot, Northill, Bedfordshire (at 'The Grange' in 1861). I have still not found for certain the death certificate of George Fage, but think that one that I ordered in April 2007 for Lucy Fage is correct.  Lucy Jones married George Fage on 5 February 1821 at Northill parish church (according to a parish extract record in the IGI).  She was christened in Northill on 24 October 1802, daughter of William Jones and Martha (IGI again).  Her disappearance from the censuses after 1871 suggested a date of death between 1871 and 1881.

The certificate records the death of Lucy Fage, widow of George Fage, Farm Labourer, on 13th August 1879 in Northill.  She is 79 years of age (a christening in 1802 would fit with this, although a birth that year would mean she would only have been 77 years old in 1879).  The informant was one Rebecca Darnell, 'Occupier', not, as far as I know, a close relative, so may not have known Lucy's exact age.  Lucy died of Cardiac Disease, Asthma 21 days (certified by Chs. P. Stevens FRCS), both common causes of death in more than one branch of our family.  I still need to investigate Rebecca Darnell and try to verify - or exclude - a death certificate for George.
