Charles Brown born c.1862/3 Little Berkhamstead, Herts

posted Friday, 8 April 2005
Hand-tinted photo of Charles Brown I thought I might have found my great-grandfather Charles' birth record with an entry in the civil  registration index (Hitchin, 3a 249, 1862); but I was wrong, as the GRO replied that the father on this certificate was not Benjamin. From his marriage certificate, I know (as far as possible!) that Charles' father was Benjamin Brown. From the 1871, 1881 and 1901 censuses it seems he was born in Little Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire. There is a baptism record in the IGI for a Charles Brown, father Benjamin, mother Esther, for 8th February 1863. I had to cut short a visit to HALS last year, so haven't been able to check this one against the parish register copies yet.

He married in Dry Drayton in Cambridgeshire in 1893 and died, according to family accounts, in 1903 in Bedford hospital, of cancer, only ten years or so after marrying Lavinia Seaby. But a certificate for a death in Luton in 1903 doesn't seem to be for the 'right' Charles.

So great-grandfather is a bit of a sticking point at the moment.
