In my pursuit of direct ancestors' siblings, I've been spending a bit of time today looking into the CADES of Gamlingay, and the brothers and sisters of my great-grandmother Alice CADE . Arthur was Alice's eldest brother, born on 23 September 1863 at Gamlingay, Cambridgeshire. He was christened on 11 May 1879 at Potton, Sandy, Bedfordshire on the Wesleyan Potton Circuit. Bedfordshire County Council has some nice summary pages of the history of Potten . He and his younger brother Walter CADE appear to have been baptized one week after the other in 1879, in the Wesleyan Chapel .
At the time of the 1881 census, he is living aged 18 at Everton Road Heath. By the 1891 census, Arthur appears to have married a Lucy and they have a one-year old son Berty. I haven't found a marriage record for them yet. The family is now living in Thurrock, Essex (Lucy was born in Orsett) and Arthur is working as Bricklayer's labourer. Also in the household is Arthur's brother Walter, aged 15, and a farm labourer. Interestingly both brothers' birthplaces obviously proved a challenge for the enumerator, as Gamlingay is recorded as Goomley!
By 1901 Arthur and Lucy are living in Dartford, Kent. Arthur is now working as an 'engine driver, paper mill'. Lucy's birthplace is now shown as South Ockenden, Esses. They are living at 6 West View Road, and as well as 12 year-old Bertie, they now have several more children: Lilian, aged 10; Stnley, aged 8; April aged 6 (and shown as 'son'); Ronnie aged 4. Boarding with the family is George MAYNARD, aged 19, presumably a work colleague of Arthur's, as he is also described as an engine driver at the paper mill.
The children's birthplaces suggest the family has moved around within the area: Bertie was born in South Ockenden, like his mother, whilst Lilian was born in Little Thurrock, Stanley in Winnington and the two youngest children in Grays. Thurrock Council has a map of local parishes which show they are not too far apart.
I haven't yet found more information about Arthur's family after 1901.
