The 1901 census records Alfred as the two-year old son of Alice and James STOCKING, probably the fifteenth of their 16 (or 21?) children . There is a birth index entry for the March quarter of 1899 in Camberwell for an Alfred Edmund I. It is possible that his third name was Ilott, and that he was named after Alfred Edmund Ilott BISHOP, at that time prospective husband of Alfred's eldest sister Harriett (they married in December 1899).
The Medal Roll Index at DocumentsOnline has two cards which may relate to Alfred: A basic card for STOCKING, AE, Norfolk Regiment, rank : Private, no: 41219, eligible for the Victory and British medals, but with no dates of service. The second is a Military Medal card for Alfred (with Edmund written in another hand alongside), rank: Lance Corporal, 1st Battalion Norfolk Regiment, no: 41219. The announcement of the award appears in the London Gazette on 24 (or 21?) January 1919: "41219 Pte (L/C) Stocking AE 1st Battalion (Catford)". The place in brackets indicates his home residence, which would provide a link to his family. The Stockings may have come to London from Norfolk in the late 1700s, which may be the link to the Norfolk Regiment (although I have no idea really how people became attached to particular regiments).
To date I have found no obvious records for his marriage nor death.
