Alexander, the last of James Stocking's children?

posted Monday, 25 May 2009

The 1911 census shows Alexander Stocking as the youngest child, aged 8, in the household of the widowed James Thomas Stocking. The census shows that James has had 19 children in all. I had seen a birth index entry for Alexander Stocking in 1902 some time ago, but wasn't sure if he was the child of James and his wife Alice Mary, nee Wales, or the son of one of their other children or extensive family of nieces and nephews.

Having ordered the birth certificate, I found that Alexander Edward was born 15th October 1902,  at the family home at 44 Herman Road, Old Kent Road, Camberwell. His mother would have been around 45 years old at the time of his birth; she is named as Alice Mary formerly Wales on the certificate, and his father is James Thomas Stocking, General Labourer.

So far I have discovered eighteen of the nineteen children of James and Alice Stocking. Alexander appears to be the youngest surviving, either their eighteenth or nineteenth child.

There is a FreeBMD marriage entry for an Alexander Edward Stocking in the March quarter of 1924, to Forence Carlow (Lewisham, 1d 179). A search of FreeBMD for births of Stocking children with mother's surname Carlow reveal one entry so far: Joyce F, September 1925, in Wareham.
