A possible Scrivener find ... and more questions

posted Sunday, 13 January 2008

Update: well, I should have realised, this entry in the 1861 census can't be of Harriet's sister Sarah, and Ann Scrivener can't be Harriet and Sarah's grandmother because their father was called William ... and living with Ann is her unmarried, 38 year-old son William.  Ah well, I'll leave the information here - it might be of use to someone else, and I'll carry on my search of the 1861 census for Sarah and Harriet, and the earlier census and other records for any sign of confirmation of William's birth/baptism and the names of his parents.

_______________

Continuing the search of the 1861 census for my great-great-grandmother Harriet Scrivener, her parents and siblings in the 1861 census, I have found a possible entry for Harriet's younger sister Sarah. According to the 1871 census, Sarah was born in Luton around 1856.

The 1861 census has a family living at 14 Davis Field, Luton: at the head is Ann Scrivener (transcribed Serivener), a widowed Bonnet Sewer aged 63, born in Luton. Her son William (38, an Agricultural Labourer) and daughter Charlotte (29, another bonnet sewer) are living with her, both unmarried, both born in Luton. Three of Ann's granddaughters are also in the household on census night: Elizabeth Bracey, 14 and Charlotte Bracey, 11, both born in St Albans', Herts., and Sarah Scrivener, aged 6, born in Luton.

My knowledge of Sarah's Scrivener grandparents is very flimsy, based largely on a possible IGI baptism for her father William Scrivener at around the 'right' time for his age in the various censuses (1811-1815) which suggests a father's name of John and mother Sarah.

William's marriage to Sarah's mother (maiden name Hawke/Hawkes/Hawker) took place on 5 February 1836, just before civil registration; the parish register entry for their marriage at St Mary's Luton gives no indication of their parents (witnesses are Elizabeth Scrivener and James Hawke(s/r). So this widowed Ann Scrivener could just about be William's mother if born around 1798 as suggested by the 1861 census.

Yet more detective work to do!
