A 6th generation connection between Stockings and Browns

posted Sunday, 3 February 2008

The marriage certificate of my three-times great-grandfather James STOCKING to Mary Ann COLLINS in 1849 names his father as Thomas STOCKING, a rope mat maker.  The family of a Thomas STOCKING and son James is shown on the 1841 census a few years before James’ marriage, living at Castle Street, Southwark. According to this and other censuses, James was born around 1829 before civil registration began, so we don’t have a birth certificate that names his mother.  However, there is a late christening record for him in the IGI at St Mary Newington for the same year that civil registration began (1837) that confirms an 1829 birthdate and names his parents as Thomas and Susannah STOCKING.  The 1841 census records Thomas’ wife as Sarah, but she is shown as Susan in the 1851 census.

My four-times great-grandfather Thomas STOCKING was born in 1806/7, Surrey, England (presumably somewhere near/in what would now be called London, probably St George, Southwark, given details in the 1851 census) and may have died in 1864.  The 1841 census shows he was born in 1806 in Surrey. At the time of the 1851 census, Thomas and Susan are living at 2 Castle Street, Southwark with four  children (and Mary, son James’ wife).

There is a difference of ten years and four months between the 1841 and 1851 census dates, which suggests Thomas was born between March and June 1806.  I have yet to find a christening record for him or any information about his parents. However, the IGI has a marriage record for Thomas STOCKING and Susan BROWN (Susannah?) on Christmas Eve, 1826 at St Peter's Church, Walworth, Surrey. St Peter is one of three chapelries in Newington (also known as Walworth) and had only been recently completed (1823-1825) when the couple was married there.

Susan (Susannah) BROWN, was born in 1807/8, Surrey, according to the 1841 and 1851 censuses. Susan(nah)’s birth and christening are recorded in the IGI in Spring 1807 at St George the Martyr, Southwark. So, some 126 years before my father Jeffrey STOCKING married Noreen Elizabeth BROWN, my four-times great-grandfather Thomas STOCKING married Susannah BROWN.
